DESTINATION INFORMATION
Nestled between a magnificent harbour and forest-clad hills, Wellington has a compact metropolis with a thriving and lively heart. The city is a centre of culture, arts, restaurants, theatre, fashion and nightlife.
Shopping facilities are excellent and hotels offer splendid views of the bay. The spectacular Te Papa Museum of New Zealand, on the city’s pretty waterfront, combines cultural and historical exhibitions with education, entertainment and leisure activities, including a virtual bungy jump.
The city's compact size makes it an easy place to walk around, but for a panoramic look at the city, you could ride the cable car up Mount Victoria and view the Parliament buildings and the timber-built old St Paul's Cathedral. One of the best ways to discover the magic of the city is on foot. While you can walk from one end of town to the other within half an hour, be sure to be enthralled by the variety of the stores within this compact space.
It is lovely to spend some time along the waterfront, where activities include biking, in-line skating, swimming in the beach or at Freyberg Pool, or simply walking and enjoying the stunning cityscape whilst having a mouth-watering gelato.
Popular destinations for excursions from Wellington include the Wairarapa wine region, Cape Palliser (whose wild coastline provides a habitat for a large colony of seals) and Kapiti Island.
