JOE HANNAFORD: Tour Operator; Africa

Having been on an EDST tour to South Africa whilst at Old Swinford Hospital, I know how enjoyable and worthwhile the touring experience is.

My route to Edwin Doran is quite typical of many who work here ... after leaving Old Swinford Hospital, I went on to study Sports Science and Physiology at the University of Leeds and graduated in June 2006.

The following year I travelled to a few different countries such as Japan, New Zealand and the USA, after which I started working for EDST.

I enjoy playing rugby and seem to have managed to play in all 15 positions but after experiencing the pain the fat boys go through up front I have settled into being a ‘girly’ back!

All time favourite sporting moment: Lions beating South Africa in 1997 and the two times Wasps have won the European cup.

Most satisfying experience working for EDST: Helping organise one of the company’s first tours to China.

"I always find it very interesting interviewing new candidates. When rugby lads apply, I always try to work out their playing position as this gives me an indication of their persona and their character. This is probably why most of our recruits are either hookers or scrum halves as they are always in the thick of the action, looking for opportunities. Joe is a scrum half. The great thing about employing people who have been on our tours is not just that they have toured, we know their tour managers who can tell us exactly what they are like. OSH is a school for which I have great affection especially Jonesy, now known as Mr Peter Jones – Headmaster!!!"
